A major experiment/theory effort at Harvard/ITAMP has succeeded in building a large quantum simulator with 51 atoms in optical tweezers. The ITAMP effort was led by Hannes Pichler.

The workshop on Quantum Thermodynamics, organized by Ronnie Kosloff (Hebrew University & Fritz Haber) and Ferdinand Schmidt-Kaler (University of Mainz), was held at ITAMP (10/30-11/1). Kosloff gave a Joint Quantum Sciences Seminar at the Harvard Physics department capping the workshop. This timely meeting addressed the subtle theoretical treatments and experimental probes of aspects of quantum mechanics and energy transfer in few-body, mesoscopic, and macroscopic systems. A recent Nature "news feature’’ (11/1/17) promoted the topic as well, including comments by Kosloff and workshop participant Raam Uzdin (Technion) [Nature 551, 20–22, (02 November 2017), doi:10.1038/551020a]. A novel proposed system to engineer topological states in the optical domain was published and featured as an Editor's suggestion in Physical Review Letters, 119 (2017), 023603. https://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.11/PhysRevLett.119.023603 Amongst the authors are ITAMP fellow Hannes Pichler and ITAMP members Susanne Yelin and Mikhail Lukin.
We're happy to announce that Johannes Feist, an ITAMP alumni, has won the 2017 IUPAP prize in AMO physics, given to scientists within 8 years of their Ph.D. He will deliver an invited talk at ICPEAC. Johannes is currently at UAM in Madrid.
A special issue of the Journal of Physics B dedicated to the scientific legacy of Alex Dalgarno has just been published. This coincides with the second anniversary of his death. In a recent Viewpoint in Physics (http://physics.aps.org/articles/v10/32), the work by the ITAMP postdoc, Hannes Pichler and collaborators, is highlighted. In this work, Hannes and his coauthors show how the issue of thermal noise can be mitigated with the proposed communication protocol, leading the way for an all-microwave quantum communication network.
