The Giant Magellan Telescope represents an enormous advance over existing telescopes anywhere on earth or in space. It will unite seven super-smooth mirrors to form a single optical surface 80 feet in diameter. It will collect more light than any other telescope in history, and it will have vision 10 times sharper than the Hubble Space Telescope. Partnership in the GMT will allow the Center for Astrophysics to advance our knowledge and understanding of the universe through the discoveries this giant telescope generates.
