The demography of massive black holes

Abstract:

If accretion onto massive black holes is the power source for quasars, then many nearby galaxies should contain black holes at their centers, and the mass function of these black holes should be closely related to the quasar luminosity function. I will review our current knowledge of the distribution of black holes in the centers of galaxies, and what we can deduce from this distribution about quasar properties and evolution.
