Observing the Past: Practical Applications of the History of Astronomy
Did you know that two historians are working at the Center for Astrophysics? Historians, like astronomers, examine the past to help us understand our universe.
Meet your colleagues, Rebecca A. Charbonneau (PhD, Cambridge University, exp. 2021) and Emily A. Margolis (PhD, Johns Hopkins University, 2019), and learn about applications of historical research in astronomy and its value for astronomers and astronomical institutes.
Charbonneau and Margolis will present several case studies in which historical problems necessitate historical solutions. They will explore the root of challenges facing astronomers today, including conflict at telescope sites, gender equity, and the maintenance of public support of science. Their analysis will show how historical thinking and methods equip us to make astronomy more equitable, productive, and impactful.
