A hybrid approach to modelling galaxies and reionization

Abstract

A suite of new telescopes targeting the high redshift universe are set to come online in the next few years and dramatically improve our understanding of galaxy formation and reionization. In addition to the James Webb and Roman Space Telescopes, intensity mapping experiments like SPHEREx and HERA will provide complementary constraints on the diffuse near-infrared and 21-cm backgrounds. In this short talk I'll describe a new model designed to enable the large-volume 'simulations' needed to capture large-scale fluctuations in the 21-cm and NIR backgrounds while still resolving the formation histories of individual galaxies bright enough to be detected in upcoming surveys. I'll discuss the impact of this approach on luminosity functions and future cross-correlation efforts, and (time permitting) introduce the possibility of detecting reionization feedback with fluctuations in the NIRB alone.

Modeling H-alpha emission from a simulated galaxy with black hole winds

Abstract

Substantial evidence supports the idea that supermassive black holes affect the evolution of their host galaxies. While most of the latest galaxy formation models incorporate some form of black hole feedback, the physical implementation varies from model to model. Constraining these models will require a more detailed comparative study between simulations and multi-wavelength observations of black hole feedback in action. As a step towards this goal, I will share an analysis of a z=2.3 FIRE-2 simulated galaxy with black hole winds. By calculating the photoionization state of gas in the simulation and modeling the transport of photons through the galaxy, I will share an analysis of the H-alpha emitting gas and how this emission correlates with various gas phase information readily at hand in the simulated particle data. By correlating ‘true’ simulation data and synthetic H-alpha emitting gas data, a clearer path can be made towards interpreting observations and testing black hole feedback mechanisms in models.
