Since its launch on July 23, 1999, the Chandra X-ray Observatory has been NASA's flagship mission for X-ray astronomy, taking its place in NASA's fleet of "Great Observatories."

The Solar & Stellar X-Ray Group (SSXG) was founded in 1975 by Dr. Giuseppe (Pippo) Vaiana to continue the research effort that led to the first high resolution X-ray images of the Sun. Forty years later, SSXG researchers continue to build and operate the latest generation of solar telescopes.
